Talking to your child about starting nursery
Through meetings and visits to nursery your child should feel that nursery is going to be a positive experience. Before they make their first visit you can help to prepare them by chatting to them about what it will be like and how they will enjoy it.
Here are some things you could chat about....
Your child will have a key person..
"There will be a special grown up at nursery who will make sure you are safe and happy and who will want to find out all about the things you like to do."
Your child will learn lots of new things from playing outdoors...
"You love it when we go to the park. At nursery there will be lots of things to do outside. I wonder if you will be able to climb like you do when we go to the park?"
Your child will develop and learn in many ways....
"Now you are so grown up you can do lots of things really well already. At nursery you will be able to find out even more new things and learn how to do new things. What would you like to learn how to do?"
Your child will meet other children and make friends...
"You know how when we go to Nan's house you love to play with your cousins, when you go to nursery you will make new friends who you can play with"
Your child will enjoy exploring high quality resources and their interests will be developed...
" You love playing with your train, don't you? When you go to nursery they will have lots of toys for you to play with. The grown ups at nursery will want to know what toys you like so they can make sure they have the things you like."
Your child will be able to enjoy healthy food and drinks.....
"Don't worry because if you feel hungry or thirsty you will be able to have a drink and something to eat."
