Families – How to help your child
The Importance of the First Language
- Research has shown that by having a strong first language that it is easier to acquire a second language.
- The development of the first language ‘mother tongue’ helps to develop a child’s personal, social and cultural identity. It helps the child develop their literacy skills and problem solving skills.
- Therefore it is very important that as parents we spend time talking, reading, singing songs, watching TV or films in your first language. Keep in contact with friends and family who speak your language.
- Do not worry about your child’s English speaking skills.
- They are in school for 6 hours a day practising English.
